This guide is an examination of the concept of Engineered Life Safety Systems. Each code has an “alternative methods” section, allowing designers to propose less costly options in place of the retrofit of automatic fire sprinklers. One of these options is a conglomeration of systems, both passive and active, called an “engineered life-safety system.” As such, any alternative, such as an engineered life- safety system, must be judged on its ability to stop flashover. It must be virtually identical to fire sprinkler systems in the function of preventing flashover. If that ability cannot be proven, then it is not “equivalent” and, therefore, is not acceptable as an alternative to a full, automatic fire sprinkler system.
